The history and culture, the sights and the sounds that make a country unique

Warm-up activity  The history and culture, the sights and the sounds that make a country unique

Teaching a language has to do with acquainting students with a country's history and culture, and the sights and the sounds that make it unique!

Do you feel like singing?

In the wild west...

...cowboys, sheriffs, and Indian boys!

Clementine is one of the most popular American folk ballads. There are many different versions of the song, but they all center around a tragic love story.

This song was sung during the Gold Rush in 1849. The lyrics and music were first published in 1884.

The song plays during the opening credits for the John Ford movie My Darling Clementine, with Henry Fonda. It also runs as a background score all through the movie.

Song lyrics:

In a cavern, in a canyon
Excavating for a mine
Dwelt a miner
Forty-niner
And his daughter Clementine

Oh my darling, oh my darling
Oh my darling Clementine
You are lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry Clementine

Light she was and like a fairy
And her shoes were number nine
Herring boxes
Without topses
Sandals were for Clementine

Oh my darling, oh my darling
Oh my darling Clementine
You are lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry Clementine

Drove she ducklings to the water
Every morning just at nine
Hit her foot
Against a splinter
Fell into the foaming brine

Oh my darling, oh my darling
Oh my darling Clementine
You are lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry Clementine

Ruby lips above the water
Blowing bubbles soft and fine
But alas I was no swimmer
So I lost my Clementine

Oh my darling, oh my darling
Oh my darling Clementine
You are lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry Clementine

How I missed her, how I missed her
How I missed my Clementine
Till I kissed her little sister
And forgot my Clementine

Oh my darling, oh my darling
Oh my darling Clementine
You are lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry Clementine
