Doing good, just feels good!
Doing good your own way feels even better!
Creating a community service project
You can make a difference!
Projects have the power to make a better world. We need changes in so many areas:
equality - inclusion - education - public health - safety
But such change doesn’t happen by chance, does it?
As the world navigates its way through pandemic-driven uncertainty, the need for doing good resonates more than ever. Can you feel it?
Create your own community service project!
Oral presentation in class
You can start with:
simplicity, bravery, decision-making, skills-based ideas, passion!
Here are some guidelines for your project:
Basic Information
- Project Name
- Short Description - Describe your project in 1-2 sentences.
- Long Description - Describe your project in detail.
- Social Impact - Explain what kind of impact your project has on the local community, environment, etc.
- Logo - Insert the logo of your social project.
- Social Project Location - Provide an address to your project.
- Contact Details - Choose a contact person for your dedicated location and add a phone number, Skype ID, and the URL of your website if provided.
- Social Media - Here you can fill in different social media channels like Facebook and Instagram.
- Project Video.
When designing your social project you should show:
- ability to plan and organize;
- initiative and innovativeness;
Let's now go through some steps of successfully planning a community social project:
Step 1: Find Out What Is Needed in Your Community
Step 2: See What You Have the Ability to Do
Step 3: Develop a Plan
Write down exactly what you are hoping to accomplish. This will include a big-picture goal as well as the specific smaller tasks that you will need to do in order to get to that main goal.
Consider the practicalities of the project. How much equipment will you need? How many people will you need to successfully complete each part of the project? How much time can each person commit to the project? How will you organize different volunteers?
Remember that you're responsible for the success of the project.
Step 5: Make a Budget
Step 6: Make a Timeline
You should already have a rough idea of how long your project will take, but now you need to narrow it down to the specifics.
Make specific schedules for each of your volunteers based on how much time each can contribute, if it is the case.
Mark specific goals on your timeline. By a certain date, a certain amount of the project should be completed, etc.
Make note of specific things that are critical to success.
Step 7: Get Publicity
You can easily advertise on your own. Set up a social media account (Facebook and/or Instagram) for the event. Make up a catchy hashtag you can use when talking about the event.
Try to enjoy yourself and stay on top of how things are progressing!
Don’t forget to add pictures and stay active on social media.
Congrats on finishing your project!
What to Do Afterward?
Take some time to reflect on the project on your own and also get feedback from the volunteers and participants.
What have you learned about yourself designing this project? This can be many things like teamwork, leadership, or planning skills.
Also, make sure you stop and consider if you actually were successful in your goals. How can you tell that you have made progress and an impact?
Finally, take some time to celebrate. You’ve just undertaken and accomplished something that many people would shy away from!
Remember that:
Volunteering your time to support a cause you are passionate about is something you will never regret. It will enrich your life, familiarize you with your community, and connect you to people and ideas that will positively impact your perspective for the rest of your life. Helping your community is an opportunity for you to grow as a person, to better understand how you fit into the world around you.
Finally, community service can help with some of the more concrete aspects of your academic and professional life as well. The work you do can be great subject material for an application essay, can lead to good letters of recommendation, and, perhaps, can lead to scholarships!
Turn in the written project to your professor!
